Privacy policy

Mbit Finland (Business ID 2817872-4), a sole proprietorship owned by Mikko Kohtala, makes Port Monitor and runs port-monitor.app from Finland, and is responsible for the personal data described on this page. Email hello@port-monitor.app with any question, or to see, correct or delete the data we hold about you. Deleting purchase or license data can disable your license.

The short version: the app reads port information locally and never uploads it. The website collects what is needed to sell and deliver a license, pseudonymous usage statistics, and, only for visitors who arrive from an advertisement, advertising measurement data.

The macOS app

Port Monitor lists the processes that are listening on TCP ports on your Mac, using macOS system tools. That information stays on your Mac and is never sent to us or to anyone else.

The app connects to the internet for three purposes:

• Free trial. The app sends an identifier for your Mac to our license server so that the 7-day trial can be limited to one period per Mac. The identifier is derived from your Mac's hardware identifier, or generated at random if that cannot be read. We store it with the trial's start and end dates. It cannot be used to contact you. The start of a trial is also counted in PostHog, with a one-way hash of that identifier and the app version, so that we can see how many downloads turn into trials. The Buy button in the app opens this website with the app version and trial day in the address, and nothing that identifies you or your Mac.
• License activation. When you enter a license key, the app sends it to our license server to check that it is valid. The key is then stored in your macOS Keychain.
• Updates. The app checks for new versions by downloading an update feed from port-monitor.app. Nothing about your Mac or its contents is included beyond an ordinary web request.

Your preferences and trial state are stored locally on your Mac. Notifications shown when you stop a process are local and contain no personal data.

The website

Usage statistics

We use PostHog and Vercel Web Analytics to understand how the site is used: pages viewed, clicks, the referring site and any campaign parameters in the address, browser, operating system and device type, and the approximate country derived from your IP address. Neither tool sets cookies. PostHog keeps a random visitor identifier in your browser's session storage, which is discarded when you close the tab.

This data is pseudonymous rather than anonymous: if you buy a license, the purchase is linked to the same visit so that we can tell which campaign led to a sale. We do not build profiles of individual people, and we do not sell personal data.

Advertising measurement

If you arrive from an advertisement, the address contains a click reference from the advertising network that showed it. Only then do we load that network's measurement code, which may store the click reference in a first-party cookie so that a later purchase can be attributed to the ad. Visitors who do not come from an ad load nothing of the kind and get no such cookie. When an attributed purchase completes, we report the order to the network: an order reference, the amount and currency, and a hash of the email address used at checkout. The network does not receive your email address or license key in readable form and uses this data under its own advertising terms.

Purchases

Payments are processed by Stripe. Stripe collects your card details and billing address; we never see your card number. From Stripe we receive the email address you entered at checkout, the amount and currency paid, and Stripe's payment references. We store these together with the license key we issue to you, and we email the key to you through our email provider.

Security and server logs

Our hosting providers keep standard request logs, including IP addresses, for a limited time for security and debugging. Our license server uses your IP address to limit the rate of requests and prevent abuse, and keeps an event log of license checks and trial requests for 90 days.

How long we keep it

We keep purchase and license records for as long as your license is valid and for as long as accounting law requires, trial records for as long as the trial mechanism is in use, and the license event log for 90 days. Usage statistics and advertising measurement data stay with the providers below in pseudonymous form. Server logs and email copies are kept for a limited time set by the provider.

Service providers

We share personal data only with the providers below, and only as needed for the purpose listed. They are based in the United States and Europe, so your data may be processed outside your own country.
